What kind of battery do I need? - We recommend using 6S LIPO or 6S LI-ON batteries for our 24V LED Modules, or 3S LIPO or 3S LI-ON batteries for our 12V LED Modules. The “Ah” or “MAH” describes the capacity of the battery and how long it will last. You can calculate how long a 6S battery will last with the following equation:
Run time (Hours) = Battery Capacity (Ah) / Current Draw of LED Module (Amps)
One 100W Module on a 6S battery draws an average of 5 Amps
Example: 0.5 Hours = 10Ah Battery / 5 Amps
For multiple LED Modules, multiply the Amp draw by the number of LED modules: The Aerial Array is 10 Modules * 5 Amps = 50 Amps. On a 6S 10Ah Battery the Aerial Array would run for 0.2 Hours or 12 Minutes.
Remember: Never drain a LIPO or LI-ON battery lower than 3.3V per cell! Always use a low voltage alarm!
How long is the lifespan of the LED emitter? ~500,000 hours.
Can I power your 100W Module with AC wall power? - Not directly. You will need an AC to DC 24V power supply capable of 7A per 100W module. For example, if you are powering five 100W Modules you will need a power supply capable of 28A. We recommend only using 24V LED Modules with AC to DC power supplies because the Amp draw will be lower.
How long can I run a 100W Module before it overheats? - Forever, as long as the cooling fan is being run at the proper voltage and nothing is obstructing the airflow.
Can I power the 100W Modules with my car battery? - Yes, if you have the 12V fan version.
What kind of drone do I need to fly your lights? - Thats kind of like asking: what kind of car is needed to tow a trailer? It entirely depends on your payload weight and the goal of your flight. If you only want to carry one of our 100W Modules with a small battery, you could get away with something as small as a DJI Phantom. If you want to carry one of our bigger lights like the Aerial Array or 2X2, you will need a larger heavy lift drone such as the Freefly Alta.
Are your 100W Modules waterproof? - No, but they can be waterproofed. Just don’t fully submerge them. You’ll need to pot the LED driver in epoxy or potting compound and seal any other exposed metal that is electrically active, such as the solder connections on the LED emitter. Tutorial video in progress.
Can I mount your LED in a waterproof housing? - It’s not a great idea. It would need to be a very large enclosure, otherwise the air would quickly get extremely hot and the LED would overheat. It would make more sense to use the water to your advantage by mounting the LED emitter outside of the housing so that the heat can dissipate into the water.
Are your LEDs dimmable? - They have a dimming range of ~30% to 100%. Dimming can be controlled by supplying the DIM pin with a 2-5V DC voltage signal. 2V=max brightness, 5V=most dim. The potentiometer included with out 100W Modules and LED drivers generates the DC voltage signal used for dimming.
Can I use a YUJI High CRI LED Emitter? - Yes, but we’ve tested them side by side with our emitters and their color profile is actually no better, if not slightly worse.
Can I use your LED Modules as a normal film light? - They are designed to be as light weight as possible and consequently are quite loud in comparison to a normal film light.
Whats the difference between the 12V and 24V LED Modules? - Everything other than the cooling fan is identical. The cooling fan output pins on the LED driver provide the fan with the same voltage as the power input, or battery. Cooling fans don’t have a very wide operating voltage range. For example, a 12V fan will not run on 24V, and a 24V fan will run very slowly on 12V. Because of this, you need to choose a fan voltage similar to the input voltage you plan to run the lights on. The input voltage does not effect the brightness at all.
Where can I get LIPO batteries? - LIPO Batteries are readily available online. Gens Ace seems to be good quality. Choose a battery with XT60 connector.
